Suicide is the leading cause of death in U.S. jails. While estimates vary, the suicide rate in jails is estimated to be 9 to 14 times higher than the general population. Suicide threats, attempts and completions are not rare events for correctional workers and represent a significant source of job stress.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. The mission of the QPR Institute is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. This “Gatekeeper” training, delivered via CD-ROM, takes just one hour and is taught in a format that is clear and concise. A “Gatekeeper” is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. “Gatekeepers” are given information that is easy to understand and is reinforced by a QPR booklet and card complete with the warning signs, methods to encourage a person to get help, and suicide prevention resources.
